Some people still use typewriters, but that leaves a host of problems such as editing and reproduction. My book "Writing as a Hobby" goes into detail about how to format the book and design the cover in Microsoft Word. I make my books 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" for the simple reason that it is exactly half the size of the most popular paper size. I do make other sizes of books, though. The cover picture can be designed using a program like Print Shop, or by using a word program like Microsoft Word.
Materials: I print my book pages on 24# bond which can be found in any store that sells paper. I set my printer on economy or draft to save ink. It will make a clear economical copy. Photos should be printed on medium, but sketches usually do well on draft. For the cover of my book, I use anything from 24# bond specialty paper to 110# bond. Specialty paper like parchment or linen can give your pamphlets a unique look. The 90# bond must be purchased at an office supply store, but it makes a great paperback. For something more sturdy, I use the more common 110# bond - card stock. Make sure you have a printer that will adjust to different paper thickness. I currently use an HP inkjet. I lfind it simple to do two-sided copies without buying the attachment. Paper can be found in all colors, but remember that printers do not print white, so if you have a lot of white in your cover picture, it will come out the color of the paper. I use clear contact paper or laminate to seal my pages. You have the option of the gloss or matte finish. A good paper cutter is vital if you are making many books. Resist the temptation to buy the cheapest one. Make sure it has a blade adjustment screw at the top. This helps cut a clean copy and makes it self-sharpening. Lines scored into the surface will not wear off. A good paper cutter will cost at least $50. Other material will depend on binding methods.
